Growing up

I was diagnosed with hemophilia A when I was 8 months old. I was living with my grandma and my grandpa at the time, and they didn't believe in putting needles in anybody, so I had a lot of knee bleeds.

I dealt with the pain, and at a very young age developed a high tolerance for it. My grandmother, instead of taking me to the hospital to get infusions, she put kneepads on me.

When my sister and I moved back in with my mom, my whole family got involved in my care. My mother learned all about it, and my sister also. My sister, she's my big sister, she learned how to take care of me at a very young age. Now she's a nurse. She works in surgery as an OR nurse.

The kids and teachers in my school district weren't familiar with my condition.

So me and my mom, we actually delivered a presentation to my entire class, and we just educated them on hemophilia A, and I'm not just talking about 30 kids, we're talking 200 plus.

After that, it wasn't, "Hey, that's the weird kid." It was, "Hey, can I push you to your next class in the wheelchair?"

My sophomore year, I went through a change. I realized that I was going to have hemophilia A for the rest of my life.

My treatment with KOVALTRY®

Now I'm on KOVALTRY® on prophalaxis. I was previously taking recombinant FVIII on demand. When I was considering whether to start on KOVALTRY®, I talked to my friends, my rep, and my wife about the product. I know Bayer because of their long-standing commitment to the hemophilia community.

Then I met with my doctor to discuss if KOVALTRY® might be right for me. We talked about the risks associated with KOVALTRY®, which include inhibitors, headache, fever, and itchy rash (see additional safety information below). We also talked about what the appropriate dose was for me and how often I should take it.

I remember taking my first dose of KOVALTRY®, I stared at it for about 30 minutes. I remember my wife, she even looked over at me and she was like, "Are you okay?" and I was like you know, it's a big deal. It's a big deal to take a medication that you're putting into your veins for the first time, and you always want to make sure you're making the right decision.

I had questions about insurance and making sure that I would be covered for KOVALTRY® before I ordered it, so my rep put me in touch with someone from Bayer Access Solutions and that process was simple for me.

I never make a decision lightly when it comes to medication. Every patient is different, and everyone should talk to their healthcare provider, but KOVALTRY® works for me, so I stay with it.

Today

I have tried to stay active my entire life, and I've always checked with my doctor before starting a sport or activity.

I lift weights almost every day and I used to be an avid runner.

I say "used to" because life got a little busy lately, but you know what? It's no big deal. I'll get back there.

Seth: Looking forward

For the generation that lived before me as hemophiliacs, I want to make sure that I do justice to them. That I live right by them. Because they paved the way for my health

INDICATION FOR KOVALTRY®

KOVALTRY® is a medicine used to replace clotting factor (Factor VIII or antihemophilic factor) that is missing in people with hemophilia A.

KOVALTRY is used to treat and control bleeding in adults and children with hemophilia A. KOVALTRY can reduce the number of bleeding episodes in adults and children with hemophilia A when used regularly (prophylaxis). Your healthcare provider may give you KOVALTRY when you have surgery.

KOVALTRY is not used to treat von Willebrand Disease.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

You should not use KOVALTRY if you are allergic to rodents (like mice and hamsters) or any ingredients in KOVALTRY.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have heart disease or are at risk for heart disease.

The common side effects of KOVALTRY are fever, headache, and rash, in addition to inhibitors in patients who were not previously treated or minimally treated with Factor VIII products.

Your body may make antibodies, called “inhibitors” against KOVALTRY, which may stop KOVALTRY from working properly. If your bleeding is not adequately controlled, it could be due to the development of Factor VIII inhibitors. Consult with your healthcare provider to make sure you are carefully monitored with blood tests for the development of inhibitors to Factor VIII.

Allergic reactions may occur with KOVALTRY. Call your healthcare provider right away and stop treatment if you get tightness of the chest or throat, dizziness, decrease in blood pressure, and nausea.

Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

Call your healthcare provider right away if bleeding is not controlled after using KOVALTRY.
